Evidence-Based Shockwave Treatment for Tendon & Soft Tissue Pain

If you’ve been dealing with tendon pain that isn’t responding to rest, physio, or injections — shockwave therapy could be the missing piece. It’s one of the most evidence-supported treatments available for chronic tendon and soft tissue conditions, and it’s available in Harrow.

Bradley uses the Storz MASTERPULS — a clinical-grade radial shockwave device used widely in professional sport and specialist MSK practice. Treatment typically takes around ten minutes per session and is delivered as part of a wider rehabilitation plan, not as a standalone fix.

Shockwave uses high-intensity sound waves delivered through the skin to stimulate your body’s own repair mechanisms — increasing blood flow, triggering a controlled healing response, and helping the tendon tissue remodel over time. Bradley attends national shockwave conferences, undertakes regular extended training, and maintains close contact with other specialist shockwave practitioners

What to Expect

Your first shockwave session will always follow an initial assessment. Bradley will confirm the diagnosis, explain the treatment, and complete a consent process before anything begins. The device is applied directly to the skin over the affected area — most people describe the sensation as an intense pressure or tapping, which is manageable and settles quickly after the session.

The first session uses a conservative intensity to establish your tolerance. In subsequent sessions, the intensity is always led by you. A course of three to six sessions is standard, spaced approximately one week apart.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

How many shockwave sessions will I need?

Most patients complete a course of three to six sessions, spaced around a week apart. Some notice improvement after the first or second session, but a minimum of three is always recommended to give the treatment the best chance of working. There’s no upper limit — further sessions can be considered if clinically appropriate.

Can I claim for shockwave therapy on my private medical insurance?

Most private medical insurers recognise shockwave therapy. Coverage varies by policy and condition — contact your insurer directly to confirm, or ask Bradley when you book.

How long does a session take?

Treatments typically take 10 minutes. However, this can vary depending on the size of the treatment area, and number of body parts to be treated.

Does it hurt?

Sessions are typically not completely pain-free — but that’s actually a good sign. If the shockwave can reproduce your symptoms in a controlled way, it’s a positive indicator that it’s reaching the right tissue. Intensity is always kept within tolerable limits and is led by you throughout. Any mild soreness after a session usually settles within 24 hours, and paracetamol can help if needed.

What can I do after the session?

Avoid heavy loading on the day of treatment. Normal activity can resume the following day. While you’re having a course of shockwave, pause anti-inflammatory treatments such as ice and NSAIDs — these can blunt the controlled healing response that makes shockwave effective.
